Trinaps, a leading telecommunications provider and data center operator, leverages CrowdSec to build a secure, resilient, and scalable infrastructure for their customers.
Now more than ever, Managed Service Providers (MSPs) and Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) face the daunting challenge of protecting their customers’ infrastructure while delivering top-quality services.
For Trinaps, a French-based company founded in 2007, this challenge is met with a unique blend of expertise, innovation, and a commitment to excellence. Trinaps partnered with CrowdSec to strengthen its own security posture and enhance the quality of services it provides to its 827 active customers.
Who is Trinaps?
Trinaps began as a company advising businesses on network infrastructure. Over the years, it expanded its offerings to become an Internet Service Provider (ISP), a telecommunications provider, and a data center operator. Today, Trinaps is a multi-faceted organization offering cloud services, cybersecurity solutions, and more. With 35 employees and a 20% annual growth rate, Trinaps has established itself as a trusted partner for industries such as automotive, public sector, and healthcare.
Trinaps’ mission is clear: transport and protect your data. This mission drives the company to deliver personalized, high-quality services tailored to the unique needs of each customer. Whether deploying wireless networks for large-scale music festivals or providing connectivity for critical public services like fire departments, Trinaps ensures that its solutions are secure, reliable, and efficient.
The challenge
As an MSSP, Trinaps faces a significant challenge and that is managing a large attack surface. With numerous assets exposed to the internet, the company must contend with constant automated attacks and internet noise. Above everything else, Trinaps must ensure that its customers’ infrastructure remains secure, which requires preemptive threat detection and rapid response capabilities.
Nicolas Iung, Head of Operations at Trinaps, explains: “We have a very large attack surface. We have a lot of internet-exposed assets, and that’s a challenge because that generates a lot of internet noise and automated attacks.” To address these challenges, Trinaps needed a solution that could complement its existing patch management processes and provide real-time threat detection and blocking.
Choosing CrowdSec was a game-changer in efficiency and scalability
Trinaps’ journey with CrowdSec began several years ago when Nicolas Iung discovered the open source version of CrowdSec on GitHub. Impressed by its community-driven approach and continuous evolution, Trinaps adopted CrowdSec’s open source solution, the Security Engine, and later transitioned to its paid offerings to support the project and gain access to advanced features.
“We try to be fair with open source projects,” says Nicolas. “When we use an open source project on an industry scale, we subscribe to support and services even if we don’t always need them. It’s our way of contributing to the community.”
CrowdSec’s ability to detect and block threats at the firewall level was a game-changer for Trinaps. Trinaps integrated the CrowdSec Security Engine across its infrastructure to centralize alerts and block threats at multiple points, including firewalls and virtual machines.
Measuring the impact
“Integrating the Security Engine combined with the preemptive power of the CrowdSec Blocklists not only improved our overall security but also reduced the workload on our teams by filtering out 80-85% of internet noise and automated attacks,” says Nicolas.
The partnership with CrowdSec has had a profound impact on Trinaps’ operations and service quality.
Reduced alert fatigue: CrowdSec’s ability to filter out background noise and focus on actionable threats has saved significant time for the Trinaps teams. Previously, the company faced up to 40,000 alerts per week, making it impossible to address every issue manually. With CrowdSec, Trinaps can now focus on recurring and critical threats, improving efficiency and response times.
Enhanced security for customers: Trinaps integrated the CrowdSec Blocklists into their firewalls to offer their customers a higher level of security. This has become a key differentiator in Trinaps’ marketing discussions, as the company can now demonstrate superior threat detection capabilities compared to other providers. “We use CrowdSec in our sales pitches — we consider CrowdSec a true marketing and sales asset when we are pitching to a new customer,” says Nicolas.
Scalability and growth: The CrowdSec solutions have allowed Trinaps to scale its operations without compromising on security. As the company continues to grow at a rate of 20% per year, CrowdSec’s preemptive threat detection and blocking capabilities ensure that Trinaps can protect its expanding infrastructure and customer base.
Looking ahead
Trinaps plans to further integrate CrowdSec into its offerings by deploying the CrowdSec Blocklists across customer firewalls and expanding the use of the Security Engine. This will enable Trinaps to provide even more robust security solutions to its customers.
The collaboration between Trinaps and CrowdSec is a testament to the power of innovation and community-driven solutions. CrowdSec’s cutting-edge technology has enabled Trinaps to strengthen its security posture, improve operational efficiency, and enhance the quality of services it provides to its customers. As both companies continue to grow, this partnership will undoubtedly play a key role in shaping the future of cybersecurity.
